Stay Faithful

Today is a hard day for many. Some are missing the moms and grandmothers in their lives, some moms are struggling to get by, and still others never really had a good relationship with the one they call “mom.” There are families struggling, marriages struggling, kids struggling, people looking at the bottom line and wondering if the bills will get paid, or if the marriage is going to last. I have people ask me on days like today “I know the Bible talks about what an excellent wife looks like, but what does it say when the marriage isn’t working out?” The simple answer is that the only prescribed reasons for divorce in Scripture are adultery and the unbelieving spouse wanting to leave. The more complex answer is that the Bible tells us to handle unfaithfulness by looking to God’s love toward us in our own rebellions.

Loved ones, life is not a romance novel or Love Story on television. It’s hard. Marriage is hard. Raising kids is hard. But as God is steadfast and faithful in His love toward us, stay faithful. People will be mean, selfish and insist on their own way; stay faithful. Wives submit to your husbands as unto the Lord, even if he’s not deserving; stay faithful, you’re doing it for Jesus, act like you’re doing it for Jesus. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her; stay faithful. He died for us while we were His enemies, love your wife, even if you’re at odds with her. The Bible calls us to faithfulness. Marriage was God’s idea. Raise your kids in the fear and discipline of the Lord, even when they’re driving you crazy. Stay faithful. Your marriage was God’s idea. Your kids were God’s idea. Stay faithful. We’re doing this all for God and His love for us. Just stay faithful.

1 Peter 2:13-3:

Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

3 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For

“Whoever desires to love life

and see good days,

let him keep his tongue from evil

and his lips from speaking deceit;

let him turn away from evil and do good;

let him seek peace and pursue it.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

and his ears are open to their prayer.

But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
