What On Earth Are You Doing Here?!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we were designed with a purpose. Whether you’re a believer in Christ or not, you don’t have to go very far in the Bible to see that purpose (literally, it’s in Chapter 1!):

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28)

I’m going to be completely honest here: I don’t care if you believe the Bible or not. There’s not your truth and my truth, there is one truth, and if I’m being honest, and having tried many other things, this is the only truth that holds water. You and I were made in the image of God whether or not we asked for it. We are given the purpose to be in His image, to be fruitful and multiply (in His image), and to subdue and rule over the earth (in His image). That’s our purpose! Sin is when we go against any part of this sacred mandate, whether it is rebelling against that image, not being fruitful, and not ruling over and subduing the earth (hint, we can’t do any of this on our own because we’re so twisted up by our sin!).

Loved ones, you were made with purpose, intricately designed, and dearly loved. So loved, in fact, that God sent His Son, Jesus, to live the life you and I could not (perfectly obedient, according to the design), and to die the death we so rightly deserved so that we could be set free from our sin and rebellion. He rose on the third day so that we may have New Life, now and in the time to come. And we get in on this good news by being born again, and following Jesus! So what are you waiting for? Live your purpose! By the Holy Spirit, live in the Image of God through the newness of Life in Christ Jesus. Go and tell others about this freedom we have in Jesus (be fruitful and multiply), and bring the Kingdom of God here on earth as it is in heaven (subdue the earth)!

John 15:1-10

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
