Where Does My Help Come From?

Writer's picture: Brian DoyleBrian Doyle

Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right!

You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress. With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.

I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words. Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings, from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me.

Psalm 17:1-9

I had a hard time getting out of bed this morning. Physically, mentally, emotionally, and in every other way, I'm exhausted. I feel as if I am running on "E," and waiting for the fumes in my gas tank to suddenly give out. Even with all of this, I know I must go on. This morning, as I was laying in bed, I cried out to the Lord: "Lord, I can't do this, but you can. I'm weak, but you're not. You have to, because I can't." It wasn't the most eloquent prayer (as I'm sure this isn't the best writing I can do), but I know the strength of my God. I have seen Him lift me up time and time again. I have seen Him perform when I could not. He is greater than I, so I give my all to Him.

Shouldn't this be how we live each and every moment? In any circumstance, I am not strong enough, I am not good enough, I am helpless. Where does my help come from? It comes from the maker of heaven and earth. Just as God breathed in to Adam and he became a living being, God's Holy Spirit fills me, and I am alive in Him, even when I don't feel I can carry on. It is by His might and power that I can do anything. This isn't true for me only, but for all who call upon the name of the Lord. He is more than able, more than capable, more than enough for whatever you're going through. We can't, but He can! We go through more than we can handle, but He can handle it all! Where does your help come from? Give it all, the great and the small alike, to the designer of life, and the author and finisher of your faith. He's more than able! Psalm 121 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
