God Hates Division, So Why Do We Keep Letting Ourselves Be Divided?

It’s easy to see in today’s world that politicians, influencers, media types, movie stars, athletes, and so many others like to play on a propagate division among people. And why do they do it? It’s profitable, it keeps them in power, it sells tickets, it gets their names out there. For them, it’s all about “me, me, me” and they will certainly crush “us, us, us” if they don’t get what they desire from us. They don’t care about equity, they don’t care about policy, they care about their power, and what they can do to keep it. Consider this for a minute: millionaires, and billionaires, many of whom we pay to entertain us and many of whom got that way in public service, who we also vote in to office to serve the public interest (odd, isn’t it?). They seek to keep people divided, and the majority of these divisions are trivial, so that they can maintain their power.

God Himself hates divisions. It’s evident in the description of the New Heaven and the New Earth:

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:1-4

He hated division so much that He sent His Son to die in our place, that we, His creation, could be restored to Him, so that anyone who called on the name of Jesus would be saved. Loved ones, if you’re a believer in Christ, the only thing that should divide you from anyone else is your separation from worldly ways and from people calling themselves “brother or sister” and yet is unrepentant in their sin. Sin is what separates us from God, which caused Death to become a part of our DNA. If God sent His Son to die that sin and death would be abolished someday, how can we stand to continue to live in it? With this in mind, stop letting division in to your walk with Christ. It has no place or purpose in the life of a believer. Separate yourself from worldliness and heretics (according to the Bible, not tradition!), and seek unity in Christ.

Romans 16:17-20

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

1 Corinthians 1:10-13

I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

Titus 3:9-11

But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
