We are being divided up in the church. People want to assign us identities as gender, skin color, party, and so many other categories. To me, this idea of this happening in the church is revolting, and, a lesson from the Apostle Paul should give us pause:
I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. 1 Corinthians 1:10-17
A predator divides the sheep from one another to feed from the flock. A Psychopath divides up the body of its members to keep its victim from struggling (If you'll pardon the graphic image, it proves a point). Satan divides the church to keep us from being united. We have been given one another by Christ Himself. Division is undoing what the Cross has done: making one people, one new nation in the Kingdom of God where there was none before. When we allow people to divide us by ethnicity, gender, and the rest, we're allowing them to get us ready for slaughter. It is together that we are strongest. Jesus Himself said "A house divided against it self cannot stand" (Mark 3:25), and so we, as His House must stand together.
The only identity each of us should have is in Christ alone, where there is no division, no distinction, and all are one in Him. Never forget, lest we be divided up for the wolves to tear us apart.
Galatians 3:27-29
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
