Sure It’s Bold, But Is It Biblical?

Dear Christian, I see you posting on Social Media, posting some bold statement, sermon or song. These go from anywhere to addressing culture, to politics, to unity, some even try and plead with people to “try Jesus.” I am proud that, on social media, you’re trying to make a statement and make a change. I just have to ask, though: is this bold stance you’re taking a Biblical one? It’s easy to get passionate about something, especially when it hits us on an emotional level: but is it a Biblical position that I’m getting passionate about?

I’m not talking about supporting my position with Scripture. Many people have, as Peter said of Paul’s writings, twisted the words of Scripture to their own ends. I mean is what I am saying, doing, posting, pleading Scriptural? Have I tested my thoughts, emotions, actions and words against Scripture before speaking or hitting send? Then, perhaps, I shouldn’t say it. 2 Peter 3:14-18Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

James 3:1-12

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
