The Word is a Lamp

Writer's picture: Brian DoyleBrian Doyle

The other day, I was going through old pictures and videos of my kids, when I ran across a video of my oldest reciting Psalm 119:105 when he was about 4 years old (you can see it here).

Your Word is like a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." When asked what it meant, in his 4 year old voice, he said "God's word will help you do what is right." How simple, yet how true! How often do we seek to find answers from someone else instead of going to the source ourselves? That isn't to say that preachers, Bible teachers, and other saints aren't important, but Jesus doesn't call us to have someone else's faith! There are some called to preach, and teach, and evangelize. They should use their gifts! But it is not their salvation that saves YOU. God desires to speak to you, and He does so by His word. Romans 12:2 says: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Through His Word, we may test the will of God! We may know what He desires as we seek Him out! James says that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us (James 4:8a). Jesus says to seek first God's Kingdom and His righteousness, and our need shall be provided (Matthew 6:33). Beloved believer, I want to encourage you today. God has so much to say to you, and intimacy with His word will help you understand in so many ways. God desires to speak to you. His word is the best way to discern His thoughts and will for your life. Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Hebrews 4:12-14 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
